“An ensemble with energy, a wholly appropriate volatility within its interpretation, and buoyancy of tutti sound”

Quartet Draig are a Welsh String Quartet who formed in 2020 during their studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where they were winners of the Albion String Quartet and Bridgewood & Neitzert chamber prizes. As a quartet they have made multiple appearances at the Wigmore Hall (Cavatina Competition, Musicians Company Competition), and in 2021 were Junior Quartet in Residence at the ESTA Conference. They have been described as “An ensemble with energy, a wholly appropriate volatility within its interpretation, and buoyancy of tutti sound” by acclaimed music critic Richard Bratby (The Guardian). In 2023 and 2024 Quartet Draig were Young Artists at the prestigious Cowbridge Music Festival.

As graduates of the RWCMD invested in the music scene in Wales, the quartet are committed to exploring and performing music by Welsh composers. They have commissioned works by the Wales-based composers Mark Boden and Cameron Biles-Liddell and have performed and workshopped extensively around Wales, displaying the wealth of fantastic music (old and new) by Welsh and English composers. They have also composed a work based on Welsh folk tunes, acknowledging the rich musical heritage of the country. The quartet are grateful to the financial support of Ty Cerdd and the Marchus Trust for their recent projects.

Equally committed to education and outreach work alongside performing, the quartet are Ensemble in Residence at Cardiff and Vale Music Education, a role which encompasses performance work with delivering chamber music coaching and side-by-side coaching with the Senior String orchestra. They also recently enjoyed local community performances at Cowbridge, further enriching their role as Young Artists at the music festival for 2023 and 2024.

On an individual basis, between the quartet they have performed with orchestras including BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, Royal Ballet and Opera, English Chamber Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Royal Ballet, Sinfonia Cymru, London Philharmonic Orchestra (Foyle Future Firsts) and Sinfonia Viva.
